Learning by Doing: How INGDA Makes Forensic Science Come Alive Online

Learning by doing: INGDA is equipping forensic science students with real investigative techniques from the comfort of home.
At Indiana Gateway Digital Academy (INGDA), we’re reimagining what it means to learn from anywhere. In our Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, students aren’t just studying concepts—they’re applying them in meaningful, hands-on ways. One recent example? Our forensic science students completed a fingerprint lifting lab at home, putting their investigative skills to the test using real-world techniques and everyday materials.
This lab is a key part of our upperclassmen-level forensic science course, available to students who have completed the Criminal Justice Pathway. As part of the lab, students are learning by doing through three different methods for lifting fingerprints using common household items—techniques modeled after real forensic practices. The lesson was taught by Wesley Hickson, INGDA’s Criminal Justice and Credit Recovery teacher, who brought his professional law enforcement experience directly into students’ homes through engaging virtual instruction.
“As a former police detective, I want to bring real-world experience into the classroom, giving students insight into how forensic science is actually used in investigations,” shared Hickson. “By learning from my experiences and applying these skills themselves, students get a deeper understanding of the role forensic science plays in solving crimes and hopefully a desire to pursue a career in the Criminal Justice field. Plus, it’s an engaging activity that students can replicate at home with their friends and family members.”
In true detective fashion, Hickson’s home was temporarily transformed into a mock crime lab—complete with tools, objects, and surfaces for fingerprint lifting. Students watched, took notes, and then set off to conduct their own investigations at home. This hands-on learning activity demonstrates how powerful online education can be when combined with immersive, experiential challenges.
Why Learning by Doing Matters
- Hands-on experience with crime scene techniques.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving through real-world application.
- High engagement beyond the virtual classroom.
- Career exploration in the growing field of criminal justice and forensic science.
This is just one example of how INGDA’s online high school programs go beyond the screen to create dynamic, career-focused learning experiences. By integrating real-world simulations into our curriculum, we empower students to build skills, explore career pathways, and discover their passions—wherever they are.
Online Learning with Purpose
Experiential opportunities like these learning by doing exercises reinforce INGDA’s mission: to provide high-quality online education that prepares Indiana students for success in college, careers, and beyond. Whether students are investigating a mock crime scene or studying for certifications, our CTE pathways open doors to the future.
