Discover how one INGDA senior found her path to academic and personal success at INGDA.

Transitioning to online education can be a transformative experience, as Avery, a senior at Indiana Gateway Digital Academy (INGDA), discovered. After struggling through a challenging junior year at a traditional in-person school, Avery found a supportive and engaging environment at INGDA that reignited her love for learning and set her on a path to success. Today, Avery’s taking over the INGDA blog to share more about how online learning has reignited her education and her desire to help others.

Finding the Right Fit.

Some families find us through word of mouth, while others meet us online. How did you and your family discover online learning at INGDA?

Avery: My junior year was really rough. I was in a traditional public school, and I had a lot going on. I have chronic migraines and insomnia, which make it hard to keep up. At one point, I was hospitalized for over a week, and I missed so much school that it just felt unmanageable to return and succeed. I tried switching to an online program through my school, but the communication wasn’t great, and I still struggled.

Before my senior year rolled around, my mom and I started looking for other options. She asked around on social media, and we discovered INGDA. After researching the school and talking to other students and families, I thought, “This sounds like exactly what I need.” And it’s been amazing!

We’re big fans of the education and learning opportunities at INGDA, but we’d love to hear from you. What made INGDA the right fit for you?

Avery: So many things! First, the schedule could be tailored to my learning style. Mornings are difficult for me, and when I enrolled in INGDA, I could begin my day closer to 8/8:30 a.m. A later start time allowed me to wake up properly before turning my attention to learning.

The teachers here are also incredible. They communicate so well and give so much grace. They’ve made this year not just manageable but enjoyable. I’ve even made friends in my classes, which I didn’t expect from an online school.

Avery’s Experience at INGDA

What have been some highlights of your senior year so far?

Avery: Definitely the classes I’m taking. I’ve always been interested in psychology and criminal justice, and INGDA made it possible for me to dive deeper into those subjects. They even got me into a dual-credit psychology course through Ivy Tech, so I’m already earning college credits!

Another highlight has been my English class. I’ve always loved English, but my teacher, Mr. Wrighthouse, is hands-down my favorite teacher ever. He makes the class so engaging and fun, and he creates a safe space for everyone to participate. I’ve made friends in that class because of how comfortable he makes it for all of us.

Despite having a growing number of students enrolled, many families are just discovering INGDA for the first time. What’s something you’ve experienced here that surprised you and might help them?

Avery: I was worried that it would feel isolating, but that hasn’t been the case at all. The classes are so interactive. We participate in debates, discussions, and activities that make learning hands-on, even in an online setting.

I’ve also found that I retain more information because I’m so engaged. For example, we use tools like GimKit and Kahoot for studying, and I’ve had all A’s this year—even acing my English finals! It’s helped me realize I can handle more independence than I thought.

This school has been such a positive environment for me. I don’t think I could’ve done the personal growth I’ve achieved this year if I had stayed in a traditional school setting. INGDA allowed me to heal and focus on myself without feeling overwhelmed.

What advice would you give to other students considering online education?

Avery: Do your research! When we were looking into INGDA, we found so much helpful information online, and everything we read turned out to be true. If you’re struggling in a traditional setting, don’t be afraid to explore other options.

Also, know yourself and what you need. For me, INGDA’s flexibility and support made all the difference. It’s okay to try something new if it means setting yourself up for success.

Plus, the independence I’ve gained here has shown me I can handle more than I thought. I know how to stay organized, study effectively, and ask for help when I need it.
